Granary Island
Granaria is a unique undertaking that combines the needs of a modern European city while respecting its heritage and rich history. It is a comprehensive urban concept, which will include apartments, commercial and service facilities, an underground parking garage and a modern hotel with numerous conference rooms. The project will be completed by a public square and a new pedestrian bridge connecting it with the city centre.
The name of the investment refers to the Latin word for the granary, as well as to the official name of one of the former districts of Gdańsk. It was here that the first granaries appeared more than 600 years ago, with as many as 340 of them at the peak of their greatest splendour. Unfortunately, the changing needs of trade and the turbulent history of the city have made Wyspa Spichrzów (Granary Island), for years the economic centre of one of the most important ports in Europe, a forgotten and abandoned place.
Designed in the spirit of New Urbanism, Granaria is a return to the classic structure of urban space, based on local history, atmosphere, ecology, functional mix and building tradition. The project aims to preserve the remains of the historical granaries and, at the same time, create a new space with a rich offering for both the city’s residents and visitors. As a result, Wyspa Spichrzów will regain its former glory from Hanseatic times and will become a stunning showpiece of Gdańsk, and the heart of the city will once again be teeming with life.
